Alpha-GPC vs. Other Choline Sources: What Makes It Different
Choline shows up in a lot of different supplement forms โ choline bitartrate, CDP-choline (citicoline), and Alpha-GPC being the three most common โ and they are not interchangeable, even though they all technically supply choline.
Choline bitartrate is the cheapest and least bioavailable form; a meaningful amount of it doesn't cross into the brain efficiently. It's common in budget pre-workout and 'nootropic' blends mostly because it's inexpensive to include on a label.
Alpha-GPC (L-Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine) is a phospholipid-derived choline compound that occurs naturally in the brain and is considered one of the most bioavailable choline sources available in supplement form. That's the main reason it costs more per milligram than choline bitartrate โ you're paying for absorption, not just a bigger number on the label.
The tradeoff between Alpha-GPC and citicoline (our other choline source) mostly comes down to how they feel. Citicoline also supplies cytidine, which some people find gives it a slightly more stimulating, 'awake' quality. Alpha-GPC tends to feel more neutral โ useful if you're already stacking it with something stimulating like caffeine and don't want to add more.
If you're choosing between them, a simple rule of thumb: pick Alpha-GPC if you want a clean choline source with no added stimulation, and citicoline if you want a choline source with a bit more of a noticeable lift.
